AUGUST 15th – 17th 2014
Dear Flat Lake friends,
After a couple of years on the pop, in the wars, away from the Butty Barn, out of the saddle and off the tractor … we are indeed tickled tent pegs to announce that The Flat Lake Literary & Arts Festival ( re-named SON of FLAT LAKE ) will return to adorn the fabulous, magical fields of Hilton Park once more.
By popular demand, some good old fashioned karma has worked its wibbly wobbly way to bring you back your much loved weekend of literary & arts slap and tickle.
Although Son of Flat Lake will offer up most of its original garnish and trimmings; Pat and I will not be no longer be able to actually run the festival due to mounting work commitments, general exhaustion and rickets. However, we are both honoured to remain as principal patrons of the event we started, as a vibrant, freshly energised, perfumed collection of Flat Lake stalwarts will take over the reigns to bring you something special. We will also help the Flat Lake incumbents as much as we possibly can
Heading up the new team will be Laura Madden & Barry McSkeane, so you will be in the capable hands of those who have been part of the original festival team since its first outing seven years ago.
Since we started in 2007, weekend festivals have become very popular across the country. The festival landscape has become painfully competitive and somewhat flooded by those that assume them to be an easy way to turn a quick buck. Many have found the reality harshly different, and although The Flat Lake laid itself fallow upon a very small debt, Son of Flat Lake intends to operate along the same non-profit making lines and retain itself as a festival run BY artists FOR artists. This fragile ecology is something the festival will strive to uphold and aims to operate this year on a miniscule budget, more in line with the original festival of 2007. Tickets will be very reasonably priced and somewhat limited to enable a modest yet solid foundation on which to rebuild.
Pat and I were recently recounting the number of magical moments we experienced over the years at Hilton Park and will always cherish the contribution of so many talented artists, including the recently departed Seamus Heaney and Johnny ‘no pedals’ Ferguson. We feel more than confident, even in their much-lamented absence, that the new Flat Lake generation will engender many more priceless moments for you to savour and enjoy.
So, there you have it, the Flat Lake returns.
G’luck, Son of Flat Lake !
Kevin Allen & Pat McCabe
PS … and they’re bringing back THE X-TRACTOR TALENT CONTEST !
